In dating terminology, a matchmaker is a person who arranges potential relationships or marriages by introducing possible mates. [1] The hyphenation match-maker meaning “marriage-broker” is attested from c. 1639. [2] In 2007, there were 1,600 matchmakers in the United States alone. [3] The Matchmaking Institute is a school in Manhattan, founded in 2003, where students can become certified matchmakers. [4]
