The web was invented 1989 by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee. The first online dating site was MatchMaker.com, launched in 1993, originally called "Christie's Matchmaker" and conceived as a pen pal type of site. www.SearchingForMyMate.com is one of several totally free dating sites operating in America, and is part of an experiment in Viral Marketing. The site is a general dating site, and not niche specific. It's dating services are totally free with the exception that basic user accounts can only send 5 emails per day, whereas premium user accounts can send unlimited emails a day. Premium Memberships are less than a cup of coffee per month. Premium account users get more exposure due to the fact that they are at the top of the list of search results when a search is done on the site.

In 2009, the American economy was very bad, and the owner of the dating site, who is also a blogger and an Internet Marketer started an experiment in Viral Marketing for his new dating site. The premise was to get his site populated with people as fast as he could so that revenue from Ads or premium accounts would start to flow in. The reason he said for doing this was to help increase income so he could stop working 7 days a week. He wanted to have at least one day to spend with his daughter on the weekend without having to work.

The code he gave out for the Free Premium Account was "1freeyear" and is still in use today as of the writing of this wiki.

There were several benefits for the people who helped him with this experiment. 1) they got a free premium account for a whole year if they wanted, 2) They got public recognition for helping and being a part of this big viral experiment, by having their blog link, or website listed on a page for the public recognition, as well as on a website called "The Viral Experiment", 3) It also gave people a backlink to their sites from his site, which is important in the terms of Search Engine Ranking and Optimization, 4) It gave people a conversation starter when going on a date, as being a part of this experiment, 5) it gave bloggers who were a part of it content ideas and topics to blog about for their blogs, in the way of being a part of the experiment, and also showing how viral marketing could and would work if an idea took off.

The idea was gotten from reading a pdf report by Copyblogger Brian Clark, who mentioned a site called the Million Dollar Home Page.

The owner of the site also promised the public a really cool video if the experiment took off and was a success.
